HUNTINGTON, W.Va. (WSAZ) - Private funeral arrangements have been made to honor the life of Jack Whittaker.
According to his obituary, Andrew Jackson “Jack” Whittaker, was 72 years old.
He died on Saturday, June 27 after a long illness, the obituary said.
His obituary goes on to say: “Jack was the owner and operator of numerous construction companies. He was the 2002 WV Powerball winner, having started the Whittaker Foundation he donated to numerous causes and building several churches throughout WV and creating college scholarships. Jack enjoyed helping those in need, dancing and spending time with his family and friends.”
Whittaker won the West Virginia Powerball Jackpot in 2002 on Christmas Day. At the time he lived in Putnam County. The jackpot was $314.9 million. He chose the cash option of more than $113 million.
Whittaker's good luck took a tragic turn after his lottery win.
He had some run-ins with the law; he also had to very publicly mourn the loss of his daughter and granddaughter.
