History of the Kentucky Lottery

Kentucky

The Kentucky Lottery got its start in November 1988 when a vote showed that citizens were ready to have a state lottery of their own. On December 16th, the laws that created the Commission were approved by Governor Wallace G. Wilkinson.

The first Kentucky Lottery tickets went on sale on April 4th, 1989 and by the end of the day retailers had sold over $5 million in tickets for two instant games. Powerball tickets went on sale in April 1992 after Lotto*America was retired and the state joined Mega Millions in January 2010.

Today, the Kentucky Lottery Commission has raised over $4.1 billion for educational initiatives in the state. Since 1999 alone over $2.2 billion has been allocated to scholarships, tuition grants and college programs across Kentucky. Thanks to lottery players, students from Alexandria to Winchester have been able to stay in-state to fulfill their dreams of earning a higher education.
